The Void is many things, but it is never nothing, raising an interesting philosophical point about the nature of nothing and the ontological paradox of nothing,...

Nick Taylor An interview with XVII: Unity's featured artist
Introduction
Nick Taylor, aka Aeoll, is a relatively new addition to the Evoke family. In fact, he is relatively new to the entire discipline of digital art, having a mere 2 years under his belt.

In this short time, Nick, 17, has grown tremendously and is producing work at an ever growing level.

On behalf of Evoke, it is the pleasure of Elie Doray to bring you this interview with this remarkable new artist, celebrating Evoke's third anniversary as an online collective.

The Interview

Elie Doray: {1} Ok first of all, tell us about Nick Taylor: who is Nick Taylor, where does he live, what does he do for a living and what does he like to eat?

Nick Taylor: I live in a village called Martham, which is in Norfolk, England. I'm studying 5 AS levels at a sixth form college. One of the subjects is Graphic design. I like Far Eastern food, Fajitas and Ice cream.

Elie Doray: {2} What brought you to the world of graphic design? Is that what you want to do for a living?

Nick Taylor: I got into graphics pretty casually, through making small art on various forums when I was 15. I'd never heard of Photoshop before, and the adventure progressed until it became a serious hobby. Although it would be amazing to take on as a career, it probably won't be the path I take initially. I'll probably continue with my maths/science side at University. After that, you never know! I've seen quite a few of the most popular designers around at the moment have a variety of other non-related qualifications. Fortunately a field like graphic design is something that doesn't always need a degree or qualification to break into effectively, so maybe I will have a chance later on!

Elie Doray: {3} So you started with making signatures on forums, just like me and many other designers, its amazing how a lot of us start like that! You were the first to submit to this exhibition, and you submitted five different, yet equally sweet works. Were you really inspired by the theme "Unity" or you were simply on fire from the beginning?

Nick Taylor: I thought Unity was a very good theme- it has a clear message but plenty of room for some less obvious, more abstract interpretations. I think I was on fire for the first few weeks though! For a month I must've been making a new piece almost every week, which is pretty good going considering the time they can take. I had several ideas in my head and they all came out quite effortlessly, which makes a nice change.

Elie Doray: {4} I'm glad to hear your creativity is on a roll ! (can you even say that ?!) Could you tell us how the Evoke environment influences you?

Nick Taylor: Its certainly a motivational influence. Its a challenge to get your pieces approved and accepted - the standards are high and quality control thorough, so getting a piece into the release isn't as easy as you might think. Of course the overall feel of the group is easygoing and hospitable, but the attitude towards the importance of meeting the deadlines and coming up with a quality release could not be stronger. As a relatively new member I'm just happy to be a part of it all, and I feel it’s a personal endeavour to contribute as effectively as I can. :]

Elie Doray: {5} What’s your preferred environment for creating art, do you have one?

Nick Taylor: Well I don't particularly have a precise setup. I'm not a music obsessed person, and I can work with or without it. As long as I have some chocolate or biscuits to keep me going I'm quite happy!

Elie Doray: {6} Who are your main idols/inspirations in the world of graphic design?

Nick Taylor: I have a section in my favourites called 'inspiration' that I refer to often. Its a mix of professional designers and students or amateurs like myself. Vault49 is a personal favourite of mine- everything they do has certain 'wow' factor. My photomanipulations are inspired by a mix of Nik Ainley, Platinum FMD, Jericho Santander and Ishbu, our very own Evokee extraordinaire!
